Bowling fundraiser to help transplant patient
Bowling fundraiser to help transplant patient
Wheaton, Ill., Feb. 16, 2010 – David Ward is fighting for his life. Doctors say a bone marrow transplant is essential to his survival. Friends and family are planning a bowling benefit and bowl-a-thon to help with the transplant expenses.
In 2001, Ward, 37, was diagnosed with Crohn’s colitis, a disease that also afflicts his mother and uncle. After returning home from vacation eight years ago, he developed severe abdominal pains and was misdiagnosed with ulcerative colitis. Although he felt better for about a month, his abdominal problems soon returned, and he nearly lost his life.
He has been so ill the past few years that he even missed the birth of his daughter, now 2 years old, because he was in a different hospital. Ward wants nothing more than to spend many more years with his wife, Mala, watching their young daughter grow up.
A bone marrow transplant costs approximately $300,000, and Ward was refused health coverage for the entire transplant process. He also will need follow-up care and medication to ensure his body accepts the bone marrow.
Because of his declining health, Ward has missed several months of work, and he will miss even more once he receives his transplant, adding to his financial strain. During the recovery process, Ward must temporarily relocate more than 800 miles away from his home in New Jersey to be closer to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago, incurring substantial expenses for travel, food and lodging.
To help alleviate some of the financial burden, Ward turned to the National Foundation for Transplants (NFT) for assistance. NFT is a nonprofit organization that helps patients raise funds for transplant-related expenses.
“It’s heartbreaking to see families struggle with the costs related to transplantation, and especially when we’re working with a young patient like David,” said Lauren Wilmer, NFT fundraising consultant. “He is already facing a great deal of stress from his illness, and these expenses are overwhelming. At NFT, we’re helping David raise the necessary funds so he can focus on his health and his family without worrying about the transplant expenses.”
Volunteers are planning Bowl 4 Life, a bowling benefit and bowl-a-thonSaturday, March 13 at Fox Bowl, 1101 Butterfield Rd. in Wheaton. The event will take place from 9 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. Admission is $25 in advance and $30 at the door. To participate in the bowl-a-thon, bowlers should create a team of six and must solicit pledges for the team. Teams are encouraged to register early to ensure an available lane at the alley.
The benefit also will include a raffle and silent auction. People are encouraged to come to bowl, participate in the bowl-a-thon or just enjoy the party.
To register or for more information, please contact Mary Ward at dollars4david@villherb.com or 630-942-1416. Tickets also are available at The Village Herbalist. Ward is a native of Glen Ellyn and is the son of Ron and Mary Ward, owners of The Village Herbalist.
To make donations in honor of Ward, please visit www.transplants.org and click on “patients we help” to search for him. If you prefer to mail your contribution, please send your gift to the NFT New Jersey Bone Marrow Fund, 5350 Poplar Ave., Suite 430, Memphis, TN 38119. Be sure to write “in honor of David Ward” in the subject line.
