Do We Dare Squander Chicago's Great Architectural Heritage? a new, free exhibition, runs February 7th through May 9th 2008 at the Chicago Architecture Foundation, 224 S. Michigan Avenue. A protest sign carried by photographer and preservationist Richard Nickel inspired the exhibition's title. Nickel's 1960 fight to save Adler & Sullivan's Garric Theater sparked the modern preservation moment. The exhibition focuses on three motivations behind the desire to preserve the built environment: to celebrate design, to foster identity, and to revitalize city life. For the past 21 years, the Little Angels Pledge Run has tooled through Northern Illinois, raising money for children and young adults with severe disabilities and complex medical needs. Little Brothers - Friends of the Elderly
The 2nd Annual Little Brothers - Friends of the Elderly "Walk in the Park," is a 3.5 mile event that invites people of all ages to celebrate long life Sunday, June 8th on Chicago's lakefront. Billed as a "stroll and roll for the young and old," Walk in the Park is the first outdoor fundraising event hosted by Little Brothers - Friends of the Elderly, Chicago Chapter. The 3.5 mile walk will begin at the south end of Lincoln Park near the corner of LaSalle and Stockton, proceed north along the lakefront path to Diversey Harbor, then south past the Conservatory and Zoo, and finally back to the Celebration of Life Start/Finish area. Walkers can expect a variety of routes to promote different levels of activity, including a short, paved fully accessible option for participants with strollers or impaired mobility or a 3.5 mile course for those looking for a challenge. Each child will have a still photo taken, participate in a brief interview that will be recorded and burned to a CD, and be fingerprinted by trained personnel. Tom "T" O'Neill Jr. is a lifelong resident of Tinley Park. He is a graduate of Helen Keller Elementary, Grissom Jr. High, and Andrew High School (1988). In January of 2004, Tom was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Due to the location of the tumor, he had to undergo the most radical of surgeries to remove the mass. This caused his pituitary gland to shut down, and as a result he will be on medication the rest of his life.
